Still a bit messy

The birds in my garden seem to love this seed! However, the seeds do seem to still sprout once they've hit the ground and I'm forever having to pluck the little blighters out of the ground, so I can't say they're mess-free.

Not as good as it used to be

This used to be a brilliant feed with no wastage, recently this has changed in some way, there seems to be quite a bit that the birds don't eat, and some of the seed is falling out of the hanging feeders which has never happened before.

    RSPB response
We had to introduce a proportion of kibbled hearts to this feed due to the global hearts shortage. The weight, nutrition and palatability of this product is the same. Please contact customer services if you believe there are any incorrect ingredients.

    Will stick with this

Consistently good value and good take up from our bird feeder although latterly sparrows seem to dominate. Even mice attracted to the store in our garage until we found a 'just the job' metal dustbin. Very little mess on the ground

    Falling seed

Unlike us birds and animals do not have a supermarket so everyday is survival for them, so I really don't mind what bird or animals come and eat the food they are welcome to it, infact I put a bowl on the floor especially for them.

    No cereals please

I have used this mix for many years and have been pleased with it. However, the cereal content, whilst not as high as some mixes, encourages wood pigeons and now feral pigeons which scare away the garden birds even the wood pigeons! The floor scatter consists mostly of cereals which attracts other unwanted visitors such as squirrels and others. I shall continue using this mix as I feel it is good value and attracts a wide range of birds, but a smaller amount or perhaps no cereals would suit my garden birds better. The softer billed blackbirds do not use the feeders and are soon shooed away by the pigeons.
Do you have a guardian which protects the feeder from Starlings? They descend upon my feeders in huge numbers which scare away all other birds and demolish the feed in minutes. Starlings and House Sparrows are not in short supply in this neck of the woods!

    RSPB response
Thank you. We will pass your feedback to the product team. Starlings are too small to exclude with guardians. The My Favourites feeder on our website should deter them. However, starlings are endangered in the UK, so we would always encourage feeding them.

    Not no mess anymore

Please note that the No Mess Sunflower mix is no longer "No Mess" . The formula has changed in recent times with the addition of oats and canary seed and smaller sunflower hearts. More falls on the ground now and the oats germinate . A bag now lasts half as long as it used to . Not good value anymore.

    RSPB response
Thank you for your review. The formula for our No Mess Sunflower mix has not changed recently. If you suspect that there is something wrong with a particular bag, please contact customer services who will be happy to help.

    Can’t keep up!

I’ve read some of the comments regarding waste but we have found it’s the complete opposite. We can’t keep up with demand from all forms of birds. It’s fantastic to watch them all. And what is even better is that we don’t have to clear up the husks. Thank you RSPB for keeping our birds so well fed and tweety.

It's stopped being no mess- something's definitely changed and deteriorated

Like the other customer who commented I've used this for years. Very happily. But recent batches have contained less shelled sunflower and more of other seeds - whose husks generate a lot of mess and which the birds don't enjoy. The result is fewer birds, more mess and more mice.
I read the RSPB's response to the other customer but my experience is identical. I think there is a quality control issue with this and that at best it's not a consistent mix.
Even if the RSPB replaced my last order I'm unconvinced. There seems to be a greater inclusion of other seeds, whatever claims are made to the contrary.

RSPB response: Thank you for your review, I am sorry you are unhappy with your recent purchases of this mix. Please contact our customer service team with the batch numbers and expiry date so we can raise this and investigate it with our supplier.

    Too much waste

I'm about to re-order a seed mix and am really torn about what to get. This mix disappears from the feeders so fast, it looks really popular. BUT most of the sunflower seeds are to be found beneath the feed-stations. From other comments I thought that it could be just the pigeons spitting them out, but this happens under the hanging feeders too, so that's not the problem.

I've even contemplated putting the mix through a food processor to break the sunflower seeds up a bit, but life is far too short for that sort of faff!

I thought that I might try the Favourites Blend instead but there are similar issues with that ...

So RSPB, can you please provide a mix without the sunflower seeds, or provide a mix with them smashed up (although am not sure that's the solution)? I spend enough on birdfood without seeing all this waste - it's very frustrating :( HELP!!

RSPB response: Thank you for your review, I am sorry to hear that your birds are leaving the sunflower hearts. It is surprising that your birds are not eating the sunflower hearts as these are a favourite feed for most birds. We will consider your comments regarding a mix without sunflower hearts or kibbled sunflower hearts when speaking to our supplier.

    Disappearing

Suddenly this is disappearing very rapidly and have begun to notice Pigeons fly off when I come into garden, are they emptying it to get at the corn/kibbled maize, and what do yo recommend instead?

RSPB response: Thank you for your review. If you are having an issue with Pigeons, we sell guardians for both ground feeders and hanging bird feeders which can help to prevent pigeons from getting to the feeder, whilst still allowing smaller birds to.

Extremely popular with all the birds mentioned in the information panel - we have 2 collared doves, plus green finches and chaffinches alongside the regular house sparrows, dunnocks, starling, and blackbirds (who have produced 3 broods this year so far). I had to get a bigger feeder!

I've used this seed mix for the last several years with no complaints from the birds but now they are rejecting all the sunflower seeds which even the pigeons aren't eating off the ground. Has the source of supply changed??

    Somthing has changed

I have been buying this see mix for many years and was very willing to pay the extra price for the ""no mess"" element. The birds love it and there was no mess at all - no husks, no seeds growing in the garden. BUT.. something has changed. The last bags I bought had a significant amount of one seed that is in the husk, the birds do not appear to want and grows very quickly all over my garden, but especially under the bird table. I am very disappointed.

RSPB response: Thank you for your review, very sorry to hear that you are not happy with your recent purchase of no mess sunflower mix. We have not changed the recipe of this mix and it sounds like you had a faulty bag delivered. Please contact customer services who will be happy to help you.

The birds absolutely love this seed mix, the feeder is always emptied quickly. It is popular with a lot of birds and nothing is wasted as there are plenty of birds waiting on the ground to pick up anything that falls to the ground. Has the recipe changed?

Or perhaps the birds of South London have developed a specialised palate. Every species to visit the feeder spends their time chucking the oats on to the ground, where even the pigeons and rats refuse to clear it up.

RSPB response: Thank you for your review. The recipe has not changed, however if you contact customer services and provide a batch code we will look in to this for you.

    They are constantly feeding now!

I bought a small bag of this to try and my goodness do the birds like it. Even our gang of woodpeckers and nuthatches have started eating this as well as the suet blocks so am now going to order a bigger bag. I cannot believe how many birds scramble around the two feeders as soon as I fill them each morning. I also mix in some kibbled peanuts as they like those too and these are better for the chicks. RSPB please supply some kibbled peanuts, if I use your whole peanuts they do not touch them and they get binned.

Our birds get through kilos of this!

Our birds can't get enough of this, in addition to the 'usual crowd' of sparrows, dunnocks, greenfinches, goldfinches, robins, bluetits and great tits on the feeders, and chaffinches, pigeons, doves, blackbirds and starlings on the ground, we've also seen a pair of reed buntings, and the local pheasants are regulars. Yes, the goldfinches seem to throw a lot of seed on the ground, but it is quickly mopped up by the ground feeders (and sadly an occasional rat). It's pricey, but worth it for the company!

Clogs feeders and not ""No Mess""

The birds definitely like it, but it clogs the feeders and the birds scatter a lot on the ground, so is definitely not ""No Mess"". There is also waste, as what is clogged up has to be discarded. I also haven't been able to identify any canary seed in this mix.

    RSPB response:
Thank you for your review. This seed should not clog the feeder and it may be that you received a faulty bag - in which case please contact Customer Services. Canary seed is included in this mix. As it is a very small seed, and is included in relatively small quantities, it can be hard to spot.

    Fantastic food

I read the reviews and was a little hesitant about ordering this mix but thought I'd give it a go but bought a small quantity. I have to say that the birds can't get enough of it! Sparrows, Blue and Great tits queue to get to the feeder - anything that ends up on the floor is eaten by the Hedge Sparrows, Robin and Blackbirds. I'm certainly going to buy some more - in a larger quantity!

    Pricey but worth it

Have used this mix for years and feeders are visited by a great number of sparrows plus finches, tits, and the resident robin. The attached spillage tray attracts chaffinches and collared doves, etc. plus an occasional unwelcome squirrel. Woodpigeons and blackbirds plus the occasional unwelcome rat clean up most of the ground spillage. If rain leaks in round the feeder ports the mix does become wet and has to be cleaned out, a fault I have found with all my tube feeders (perhaps I should fit hoods?). The goldfinches now seem to be ignoring the niger seed feeder, preferring to dine on sunflower hearts. Can't have a bird table in garden due to large flock of feral pigeons in area and ground feeding attracts vermin. There is something in the mix the port feeders don't like as there would be some waste if it wasn't cleaned up by the tray and ground feeders. Some competitors products are just as good, but some are in it to make (a lot of) money - at least RSPB benefits from the profit made.

    Not Good Clogs in Feeder

We used to use a traditional sunflower mix and had no problems at all. Not even with the sunflower husks as it was on the lawn.
We use it in a RSPB 6 perch bird feeder.
After a few days the seed gets wet and clogs up and does not flow in the feeder. I then have to empty the wet seed out and dry it out.

    Not for my wee birdies.

I tried this for a week. My birds were not impressed with the change, they hardly touched it. The regular Mr & Mrs Bullfinch & the Greenfinches who spend 10 mins feeding away were flying off after seconds. I think they quite like rummaging around the RSPB feed mix extra, discarding the seeds they don't like. It won't go to waste, just get added to the regular food.

    Good Quality Seed

First time i thought i try this seed and i did not think the birds would of eaten very much of it.. Wrong! seems they love it and does go quite fast. I would buy this seed again for the birds but i did find the price a little high but in saying that it is good quality seed like every food sold by the RSBP. No mess NO waste? . well there is mess but i find this does not come from the seed rather from the birds flicking the seed out which they do not. So really there is no waste from the seed they eat. Once again i found best to use a Bird feeder seed tray with it.

    No mess?

Have been using this mix for many years, and there is no doubt the birds like it; but the description 'no mess' is wildly inaccurate. Sparrows especially flick the seeds all over the place, and every day I have to shovel up at least half the quantity I have put in the feeder - I have not seen a single bird attempt to eat the mess on the ground. Every spring I have a ready supply of sunflower seedlings to transplant elsewhere in the garden!
Like Ghille I have found plenty of husks in the debris, and I cannot identify the canary seed either!

This has become a staple for the birds that visit my garden

I have been using this seed mix for some years now in a peanut feeder for the smaller birds, together with RSPB table mix which is mainly provided at the bigger birds. Like Glenda, I haven't found any bird that does not like it. The bigger birds (Wood Pigeons, Jackdaws and Magpies etc) keep an eye on the feeder and then patrol around the base of it for spliiage whle the Chaffinces, Goldfinches and Robins etc are feding. Hence I have a a varied variety of birds in my garden most ofthe time. I have tried other brands but the RSPB has usually supplied more cheaply and it's delivered to my door for a very small additional cost. I would recommend this product.

No quite husk free as picture suggests. Think its the oats but something has a husk so it does leave a small amount of mess on the ground and after 3 months you can tell the bird feeder is there. A Feast for Finches

I recently introduced this seed mix to the wide menu already available to my garden birds and almost immediately was rewarded by the arrival of previously elusive greenfinches and goldfinches on the feeder. Other birds including tits and sparrows like it too.

Previously I had put out table seed mix, buggy nibbles, peanuts, nyjer seeds, mealworms, suet balls and cakes - with only a general hanging seed feeder missing from the birds' real estate. However, apart from the occasional chaffinch happy to feed from the ground with the sparrows, no other finches came to the party. My nyjer seed feeder remained untouched for months, despite my parents' identical feeder proving consistently popular with goldfinches only two gardens away.

Now the sunflower mix in a medium feeder has succeeded where other food has failed to attract these finches - my best sighting to date being three juvenile goldfinches. Very satisfying indeed!

    It goes so fast!

I bought the two big bags because birds seemed to be getting through the small amounts I was buying from our local market too quickly, and because it was a good deal cost-wise. The birds love it and I'm filling the feeders faster than ever. It's been so successful. It is largely mess free, and so far (a month) on the feeders and floor around them, I've had: sparrows - by the million! - wood pigeons, the odd dunnock, a regular visiting robin, starlings, blackbirds, a regular goldfinch, a regular bluetit, a regular great tit, and occasional other tits, and a couple of magpies. I have other feeders with different food (fat balls, nibbles and niger seeds) which do quite well too, but this mix is easily the most popular.

    outrageous price increase

I have given no-mess sunflower mix great reviews in the past. I paid £25.99. for 12.5.k mid 2012, I decided to order another 12.5.k. in Feb 2013 to find an outrageous increase in price to £33.99 some 30% all-though a good product. it is now too expensive. I will now have to find an alternative.

RSPB response - Thanks for your review. The £25.99 price you have quoted was a promotional price, which was only available for a short period.
In 2012 this product was £30.99. The price has only increased by £3 in the past 26 months, which is due to increases in grain prices and inflation, which are beyond our control.

    Birds love it

I totally disagree with the previous reviewer - I wish the birds in my garden didn't like this mix so much, it's costing me a fortune to keep up with them! We fill one large and two medium feeders with this at least once a week (we do feed other stuff too) and the large feeder, which is not protected by a guardian, is usually empty 24-36 hours after filling. We get goldfinches, greenfinches, tits (blue, great and long-tailed), starlings, chaffinches, robins, dunnocks and pheasants on these feeders or on the ground beneath picking at the spill.

Not popular with the birds in my garden

I normally use black sunflower seeds, but am constantly sweeping up the shells from my lawn. So this looked like the answer for me. The only trouble is...the birds don't like it as much. From filling the hopper with black sunflower seeds every couple of days, the level of this didn't go down very quickly at all. Also, when it rained, this mixture clogged the bottom of the feeder, so the birds couldn't get at it anyway. Even when I put it on the lawn or out on trays in snowy weather, the birds didn't really go for it. I have now gone back to black sunflower seeds.

    Universally Popular

I've been buying this mix now for 3 years. It remains universally popular with a wide range of birds which visit our small suburban garden on the edge of more open countryside. In addition to the usual Green and Gold Finches it has attracted Coal, Great and Blue Tits and this year even a Nuthatch rocked up to sample it.

    Birds love it!

Have to say that this product is good or better than others in that it leaves less mess on the ground. Otherwise cheaper bulk buys of more standard bird seed does the same trick for my visitors. Much rests on where you live I imagine, but I really do not think that birds are very fussy about how much one pays for their food. I buy niger seeds separately for the goldfinches, which they flock to devour! As for the mess, again much depends on your garden size and the location of feeders but not a real problem for me.

    Birds Love It

Am fairly new to feeding birds and this is the first food I bought (and continue to buy). I initially bought a small feeder with 2 perches. I couldn't believe how popular the food is and have now got to buy a bigger feeder as there are always queues of birds on the garden fence and top of the feeder and I'm having to fill the small feeder so often. It's expensive but worth it because of the masses of birds it attracts - goldfinches, sparrows, tits, chaffinches, an occasional bullfinch and greenfinch, robins, and blackbirds and woodpigeons (underneath picking up the bits). Highly recommended.

    Excellent product

This is the best bird seed I've purchased. In my last garden it was the only food the fussy birds would eat! I tried everything else and they weren't interested, but they loved this. In my new garden it's attracted every kind of tit possible as well as all sorts of finches and even a nuthatch. Very pleased with it and it does what it promises - makes no mess at all.

    Just brilliant

The goldfinches (which I thought would never leave the niger seed), robins and chaffinches fight all day long over the perches on the feeder. The sparrows, collared doves, wood pigeons hoover up what the messy goldfinches scatter. But best of all I have greenfinches visiting now :)) On cold days I scatter more on the ground to prevent too many fights. Just waiting for the return of the lone bullfinch I saw 6 months ago...

    less mess

This seed mix does not seem to be quite as popular as the Feeder Mix Extra with the birds in our garden. It does last a little longer in the feeder. At least there is no clearing up from husks, not sure yet if there will be growth beneath the feeder. I tried another brand (non-RSPB) that promised no growth but the birds just threw it around so it was a complete waste of money.

    Really no mess!

I first tried this product when I got really fed up with 'alien' plants popping up in my lawn. I have had no such problems since I started serving this mix on the ground for the waiting blackbirds, on the tray for sparrows, starlings, robins etc. and in the feeder for those not quick enough to feed from the tray before it is emptied, or those too small to stand their ground there. The only problem I have with this mix is the clogging of the base of the feeder in wet weather as the grains absorb moisture more readily without their husks, but a daily poke with a fine plant support stick helps to keep it flowing freely. This seed combined with mealworms, fatballs and a few peanuts attracts robins, sparrows, dunnocks, starlings, pigeons, doves, blue, great, coal and long-tailed tits, bullfinches, siskins, yellowhammers, blackbirds, thrushes, bullfinches, chaffinches, greenfinches, goldfinches, many of which nest in nearby hedges.

    Really good stuff

Can't help but agree with Caroline Matthews. Not cheap (but then bird food isn't these days) but the birds love it, there is very little mess (and that which there is gets hoovered up by the ground-feeding birds) and we have seen an increasing number of species take a liking to it.

    Best bird mix ever!

I am astounded if I see anyone reviewing this product as wasteful. I have tried allsorts of mixes including various RSPB ones and this is the one I go back to. I have allsorts of food available, suet balls, blocks etc but this one I have to refill my bird feeders every 2 to 3 days. Minimal bits on the ground but the ground feeders clear it up. Would recommend this to anyone.

    The BEST

We have been buying this product for years now and it is very popular with the birds here in Buckinghamshire and in our previous home in London. There is little mess as there is always someone willing to eat what someone else discards and there are no seed coats flying about. We have virtually no problem with germinating seeds in the garden AND our bird table is significantly more poular than those of our neighbours!! Yes it's expensive but they're worth it !!

    Goldfinches love this

The no-mess sunflower mix sat ignored in the feeders for a few weeks and I thought I had wasted my money. Then a pair of goldfinches discovered it and starting munching away, they seem to have told some friends as I have counted up to 5 in one go. They are there munching away from breakfast time until dusk. Beautiful birds. The certainly make a mess dropping bits all over the floor, it is hard to tell if they are picking bits they don't want out or are just messy eaters though! The blackbirds, great tits and pigeons clear up the mess anyway.

Very choosy birds in our garden, too

Like Anon, the birds in our garden only choose the sunflower hearts - once a week I have to clear up the ground under the feeders and throw away approx 25% of the mix. It is certainly a very popular mix, but the rarer birds seldom get a chance to eat, as the feeders are always overwhelmed by sparrows.

    ?More mess from bulk supply

I have been using this mix since last Christmas and at first there was no mess. Because the birds were eating it so fast I bought the bulk supply and since then they have been dropping far more. Goldfinches seem to spit out the seeds they don't want onto the ground, often watched by blackbirds and pidgeons who usually hoover it up. However the ground is still messy under the feeder.

    Losts of waste!

My only problem with this mix is that the birds in my garden also seem to sort through and throw aside lots of other seeds in favour of the sunflower hearts. This does create a lot of waste on the ground which even the robins, collared doves and wood pigeons can't keep up with. However I am getting more and also some sunflower hearts to mix with it. Having said all of the above I get sparrows, gold finches, green finches, blue tits, great tits, chaffinches and unfortunately more and more ring necked parakeets. Not bad for a west london garden near the M4 - so it must be pretty good!
